Wet weather forces teams indoors

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Banquete coach Kevin Hermes stood outside the school’s fieldhouse taking in the weather Tuesday afternoon trying to decide if the Bulldogs would be practicing outside or in the gym. Either way, Hermes said the team is going find a way to continue its preparations for Friday’s final non-district tune-up against Hebbronville.

“We’ll probably get indoors in the gym and have a walk-through,” Hermes said. “We’ll have the same amount of practice time, but with a lot more film. We’ll make some changes in what we do, but we’ve had to do it before. That week of the Aransas Pass game we struggled with the weather all week. We won’t be only ones.”

Banquete is coming off a 28-20 victory over Orange Grove. Running back Roger Garcia scored all four touchdowns in the first quarter on a 78-yard kickoff return and runs of 44, 15 and 32 yards.

Despite being shutout the rest of the way, Hermes and the Bulldogs are pleased with the outcome.

“We have to credit Orange Grove because they never gave up,” Hermes said. “We also gave them some opportunities. We snapped one though our quarterback’s legs and they picked it up and scored. It was frustrating, but our kids kept playing hard.”
